What termites are in Arizona?

Termites are one of the most pervasive pests in the world. There are over 2,000 species across the globe, with about 40 being found in the United States. However, there are two main termite species that routinely invade homes and businesses in Arizona:

  • Eastern Subterranean Termites
  • Formosan Termites

Regardless of what type of termite you come across, it’s important to get
professional pest control if you come across any termites or wood damage on your property. Colonies often go undiscovered for years, allowing the insects to cause considerable damage by the time you treat the infestation.

Termites in Arizona

Thanks to our warm year-round climate, termites are a common problem in Arizona. While we primarily deal with just two different species, the types of termites in our area are some of the most destructive. Here’s what you need to know about termites in Arizona:

  • Eastern subterranean termites are notorious for causing costly damage to houses and other structures with wooden components. They’re considered the most economically destructive termites in North America. These termites have smaller bodies and need contact with soil to survive, so they often build mud tubes to travel inside of.
  • Formosan termites are aggressive. Their colonies are exceptionally large, with some growing to contain millions of individual insects. Since they aren’t picky while feeding, they’ll chew through almost any type of wood. They also build underground tunnels,  making it hard to notice an infestation.

What Type of Termite Do I Have?

More often than not, you’re going to come across termite damage long before seeing a live insect. That can make it almost impossible to determine what type of termite you’re dealing with. If you’re worried you have termites on your property, we strongly recommend contacting a termite control professional. After figuring out what type of termite you have, they’ll be able to implement a personalized treatment plan that is tailored to your needs and most effective against the termite species in your home.
